Monks called yamabushi tell people called choudainin to “Eat it!” while presenting them with a huge mountain of rice weighing about six kilograms. The choudainin place the rice on their heads to show a feeling of “Please forgive me.” It looked like such an interesting event that I thought I’d like to see it in person next year. 【Today’s words】 強飯式 (ごうはんしき) / Gohanshiki is a traditional ceremony in Nikko where monks offer a huge amount of rice and say, “Eat it!” The people taking part are believed to receive protection from bad luck and blessings. 行事 (ぎょうじ) / event, ceremony 山伏 (やまぶし) / yamabushi, mountain ascetic monk 山盛り (やまもり) / a huge heap, piled up high 頂戴人 (ちょうだいにん) / person receiving the offering 生で (なまで) / in person, live 📍日光山 輪王寺(にっこうさん りんのうじ) https://www.rinnoji.or.jp/en/
