Cookie & Storage Policy

Last updated: May 23, 2026

Onion Podcasts is designed to minimise the use of cookies and browser storage. This page explains exactly what we store on your device, why we store it, and how you can control it.

This policy is consistent with our Privacy Policy and complies with Directive 2002/58/EC (ePrivacy) as implemented in Spanish law (LSSI-CE) and with Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (GDPR).

1. What are cookies and local storage?

Cookies are small text files that a website stores in your browser. Local storage (localStorage) is a similar mechanism that stores data in your browser without an expiry date unless the site explicitly removes it. Both can be read only by the site that created them.

2. Storage we use

We use a very small number of storage items, grouped into two categories: strictly necessary items (always active) and analytics items (only active after you give explicit consent).

2.1 Strictly necessary (no consent required)

These items are essential for the site to function. They cannot be disabled without breaking core features such as staying logged in.

NameTypePurposeDuration
onionpodcasts-authlocalStorageStores your authentication token and basic profile data so you remain logged in across page reloads. Never shared with third parties.Up to 30 days (cleared on sign-out or expiry)
cookie_consentCookie (first-party)Stores your cookie consent choice (accepted / rejected / not yet chosen) so the consent banner is not shown on every page.1 year

Because these items are strictly necessary for the service you requested, they are set without asking for consent (Recital 25 of the ePrivacy Directive).

2.2 Analytics (consent required — off by default)

We use Umami, a self-hosted, cookieless web analytics tool, to understand how the site is used in aggregate. Umami is disabled by default and is only enabled if you click Accept in the consent banner.

NameTypePurposeDuration
umami.disabledlocalStorageInternal gating flag used by the Umami analytics library. When set to '1', all analytics collection is blocked. Removed when you accept analytics.Until you accept analytics or clear browser storage

Umami characteristics when enabled:

  • Self-hosted on our own infrastructure in the EU. No data leaves our servers.
  • No cookies — Umami does not use cookies of any kind.
  • No personal data — no IP addresses, no fingerprints, no data that could identify you.
  • No cross-site tracking.
  • Only anonymous, aggregated data: page views, referrers, browser/OS, screen size, and country.

3. Storage we do NOT use

  • Advertising or retargeting cookies
  • Social media cookies (Facebook, Twitter/X, etc.)
  • Third-party analytics cookies (Google Analytics, Hotjar, etc.)
  • Any cookies or storage from third-party domains

4. Managing your consent

You have full control over analytics tracking:

  • When you first visit the site, a consent banner is shown. Analytics are disabled until you click Accept.
  • You can change your choice at any time by clicking the "Cookie settings" link in the footer.
  • You can also delete all browser storage for this site using your browser's developer tools or settings.

Withdrawing consent does not affect the lawfulness of any processing already carried out. Strictly necessary items (auth session and consent cookie) cannot be removed without losing your session.
