About this episode

It’s from two years ago, but I happened to come across a news story on YouTube about the world’s oldest dog in Portugal, who had died at the age of 31. What surprised me was that the report used the Japanese word 死んだ (shinda, “died”) instead of 亡くなった (nakunatta, “passed away”). When I looked into it, I learned that in Japanese news reports, 亡くなる is generally used for people. Apparently, newspapers and news reports have lots of rules about which words they use. 【Today’s words】 最高齢 (さいこうれい) / the oldest, of the greatest age 亡くなる (なくなる) / to pass away 死ぬ (しぬ) / to die 人間 (にんげん) / human, person Xに対して (Xに たいして) / toward X, for X https://youtu.be/fDau9HXXMxI?si=7KYTqmAuNl4QyQsU
