About this episode

Today my former colleagues from a company I used to work for and their babies are coming over my apartment. I am thinking of giving them baby gifts. In Japan, it’s said that green tea, handkerchiefs, kitchen knives, and other knives are not supposed to be given as baby gifts. Do you know why? 【Today’s words】 後輩 (こうはい) / You can use 後輩 not only at school but also at work, someone who joined a company later than you is kouhai. 出産祝い (しゅっさん いわい) / baby gift ※ These are typical things that are not for baby gifts and the reasons why they’re not good. 緑茶 (りょくちゃ) / Green tea → We usually use it as a return gift to a condolence gift. So it’s not suitable as a baby gift. ハンカチ (はんかち) / handkerchief → Handkerchief reminds you of wiping your tears and parting. 刃物 (はもの) something with blades, like knives, scissors, etc → They “cut” things, so they remind you of cutting the ties or parting. ★This post is also available on the broadcast channel (Japanese daily tips) of my Instagram. 【https://www.instagram.com/channel/AbbOi9lyhNtGwo6A/?igsh=enhqNGRyajhobnZ5】
