About this episode
Lily Greig is a Tāmaki-based artist currently working across sculpture and installation, while orientating the work itself within this cultural framework of mythology. Recalling these archetypal characters from mythology itself, as well as psychoanalysis. Bringing together these various modes of meaning making that are often found within these very texts, and the objects that arise within. Greig's work Doorscape (formula for not dying again) is currently included in Artscape Aotearoa's Chartwell Trust New Commissions group exhibition, Group Admits Mistake , along with fellow artists Lolani Dalosa, Ken Faber, Ton Ray, and Rangi White. In Doorscape (formula for not dying again) Greig displays a new sculptural installation that almost embodies a scene like structure. Creating an alternative reality to that of the gallery space. A white freestanding door, embellished with imagery of demons, and a wax casted boy lying before it. Leaving viewers witness to an aftermath of sorts. Here, the work itself calls out to various texts and imagery. The most prominent calling out to that of the Duat, an Egyptian netherworld where the dead must pass through the gates guarded by demons. But this scene of sorts is not linear in its story telling, it also speaks to the world of fairytales and fables. Specifically in relation to the growing nose of the figure laying before the door - a nod to Pinocchio, a suggestion of lie. Pointing the audience towards a mode of looking beyond its very reality. Asking them to ponder at the larger fable at play, a story with no fixed ending, submerged in temporality. Maya caught up with Lily about the exhibition as well as her overall practice.
