About this episode
Ruby Wilkinson is a Naarm-based artist from Aotearoa whose practice approaches painting as both a sensory, material language and a form of observation. Observing her surrounding environment, her work centres the sky, light, and associated life as her subjects of interest, enjoying the fluidity and intuition of abstraction in the process of bringing them to life. Her current solo exhibition at Two Rooms Gallery, Hullabaloo , extends on these interests, presenting a beautiful new body of paintings in an exploration of the sky as a realm of creation, freedom, and communication through the totemic figure of the bird. The works themselves flit in and out of abstraction and figurative forms, capturing these fleeting movements of birds in these transitional moments like a snapshot - the figures themselves there, but only momentarily, creating this kind of sensation that life may emerge from the paintings, or these forms will shortly evolve into something else. In this sense, they may be understood as more representational in their form - taking on these soft gestures and swift movements - sometimes only with an outline of Wilkinson’s subject - allowing space for the viewer to complete the painting themselves. Sof caught up with Ruby about Hullabaloo and her overall practice.
