Study of past beef industry lobbying against climate science w/ Dr John Kerr: 14th Oct, 2026
About this episode
Lobbying has featured as a prominent political issue this election, with the particularly notable example of the Prime Minister’s office concealing documents received by major emitters - such as Fonterra - lobbying to shut down climate lawsuits. For coverage of this particular scandal, and to hear from experts on the lobbying landscape in Aotearoa New Zealand , do listen back to our recent interviews for the Wire, 95bfm.com/bcasts. A new study, published just last week, has provided an impressive case study of industry meddling. Combing through documents from 1986-96, US researchers have been able to paint a picture of the tactics used by the National Cattlemen's Association to deny climate science, and muddy the waters with their own research. So to hear more about the relevance of the troubling tale these documents tell for us in present day Aotearoa New Zealand, producer Theo spoke with the University of Otago’s Dr John Kerr.
