Designing the New American University

This excerpt from Designing the New American University examines the challenges facing American higher education, particularly research universities. The authors critique the current model's limitations, such as high costs, limited accessibility, and a focus on prestige over societal impact. They propose a "New American University" model emphasizing inclusivity, affordability, and real-world application of research. The book uses Arizona State University's transformation as a case study illustrating how these goals can be achieved through strategic institutional design and a commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration. The authors also explore the historical evolution of American universities and the tensions between tradition and necessary reforms.
