About this episode
Leaving nursing can seem like the obvious answer when exhaustion, stress, schedule, and changing priorities begin to collide. But sometimes the problem is not nursing. Sometimes the problem is that the way nursing is being experienced no longer fits the person who has grown through years of doing it. A nursing career changes more than a résumé. Bedside practice, leadership, education, advanced practice, specialization, mentorship, advocacy, and countless difficult decisions shape how a nurse thinks, responds, leads, communicates, and solves problems. That experience does not disappear when the role changes. Yet a transition can make an experienced nurse question everything. A new position may feel unfamiliar. Expertise may no longer receive immediate recognition. The impact of the work may look different. The confidence that once came naturally can become harder to access. That discomfort can easily be mistaken for evidence of having made the wrong decision. The more useful question is often not, “What job comes next?” It is: What has changed? That question creates space to separate dissatisfaction with a role from dissatisfaction with nursing itself. It also creates room to recognize what still matters, what needs to change, and what valuable experience deserves to move forward. The initials RN do not tell the whole story. They do not capture the years of clinical judgment, leadership, problem-solving, teaching, advocacy, relationships, resilience, or wisdom accumulated along the way. A nurse is not starting over. A nurse is starting from experience. Perhaps the next question is not whether nursing should end. How do I want to experience nursing now? That question opens a different kind of conversation. One that considers career alongside family, time, identity, priorities, financial realities, and the person who exists beyond the job description. The work of The Second Shift begins in that space. Not coaching nurses out of nursing. Coaching nurses through nursing. A question to carry forward What has changed? Not just in the job. In the career. In life.In priorities. In identity. In the way work needs to fit. The answer may reveal that the next chapter is not about starting over at all. It may be about using everything already learned to create a way of working that fits the nurse who exists today.
