About this episode

A rare South Island giant moa egg will be returned to Aotearoa, after being bought from a private collection in the United States. According to auction records, the egg was discovered in New Zealand in 1966, and may have originated from a human burial site dating to the Moa Hunter period, around AD 1300. The egg has been bought by Colossal Biosciences, and will be returned to Ngai Tahu research leaders as part of the giant moa de-extinction program. Paul Scofield, senior natural history curator at the Canterbury Museum in Christchurch, and Moa expert, spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
