Join Rob McConnell as he welcomes William J. Federer, author, speaker and historical commentator known for his writings on American history, religion and government. Federer is president of American Minute, Inc., produces the American Minute history feature, and has written or contributed to more than 30 books. His best-known works include America's God and Country Encyclopedia of Quotations and What Every American Needs to Know About the Qur'an: A History of Islam & the United States. Federer is also a former candidate for the U.S. Congress, In this edition of The 'X' Zone Radio Show, Rob and Federer tackle the provocative subject “America's Threat from Islam.” Federer's 2007 book What Every American Needs to Know About the Qur'an examines approximately 1,400 years of Islamic history, including the expansion of early Muslim empires, conflicts between Islamic and Christian powers, and the historical relationship between Muslim states and the United States. Federer uses that history to argue that Americans should pay greater attention to political Islam, religious extremism and movements seeking to impose religious authority through government. The distinction between Islam as a religion practiced by nearly two billion people worldwide and violent Islamist extremism is essential to any serious discussion of this subject. Federer's interpretations of Islamic texts and history have been strongly critical of Islam, and some of his broader conclusions are disputed. The conversation therefore provides an opportunity to examine his arguments critically while separating documented historical events, contemporary security concerns and extremist ideologies from sweeping generalizations about Muslims as a whole.
