Welcome to Onion Podcasts

Today we take a step we have been preparing for a while. Onion Podcasts is here, and we want to tell you why we built it, what you can expect, and why we believe the podcasting world needed something different.

What is Onion Podcasts

Onion Podcasts is an independent podcasting platform designed from the ground up to put creators first. We are not a large corporation or a content aggregator: we are a small team that believes podcasters deserve better, fairer, and more transparent tools.

Whether you are a creator looking for a home for your podcast or a listener who wants to discover new voices, Onion Podcasts is built for you.

Why we built this platform

The podcasting industry has grown enormously in recent years, but that growth has come with problems that disproportionately affect independent creators:

  • Platforms that shut down without warning. Many creators have lost their audience overnight when the platform they relied on decided to close or change its model. The shutdown of Mumbler in Spain is a recent and painful example: hundreds of podcasters lost their tools, their subscribers, and their income from one day to the next.
  • Unfair monetization models. The largest platforms take commissions of 30% to 50%, leaving creators with scraps.
  • Invasive advertising. Many platforms force listeners to hear ads they did not choose, without giving creators real control over what is advertised in their content.
  • Lack of transparency. It is hard to know what actually happens with your data, your metrics, and your money.

Onion Podcasts was born to be the alternative. A platform where 90% of revenue goes directly to the creator, where there is no forced advertising, and where transparency is not a slogan but a commitment.

Key features

We have built a set of tools that cover what creators and listeners actually need:

For creators

  • Subscriptions and premium content. Offer exclusive episodes, early access content, or extras only for subscribers. You decide what is free and what is paid.
  • Episode extras. Upload supplementary material for your episodes: transcriptions, show notes, links, downloadable files. Everything organized alongside the corresponding episode.
  • Private RSS. Generate private RSS feeds so your subscribers can listen to premium content from any podcast app, without losing the convenience of their favorite player.
  • Fair monetization. You keep 90% of what your subscriptions generate. No surprises, no fine print.
  • Clear analytics. Real, understandable metrics about your audience, without inflated numbers or confusing dashboards.

For listeners

  • Discover new podcasts. Explore by categories, trends, and personalized recommendations.
  • Comments and polls. Actively participate in each podcast's community. Comment on episodes, answer polls, and connect with other listeners.
  • Built-in player. Listen directly on the platform with a powerful player that remembers where you left off, on any device.
  • No ads. Your listening experience is never interrupted by advertising you did not ask for.

The context: why now

If you are part of the Spanish-speaking podcasting community, you probably remember the shutdown of Mumbler, a Spanish platform that many creators had adopted as their main tool. When Mumbler closed, dozens of podcasters lost access to their monetization tools, their subscriber lists, and in many cases, a significant source of income.

That episode made it clear that creators need platforms that do not depend on a single company or an unsustainable model. Onion Podcasts is built with that lesson in mind: we want to be a stable, sustainable, and community-centered option.

We are not trying to replace anyone. What we do want is to offer a solid alternative so that no creator is left without options.

Privacy: a real commitment

At Onion Podcasts, privacy is not a checkbox to tick for legal compliance. It is a design principle:

  • No tracking cookies. We do not use third-party cookies or advertising tracking technologies.
  • Respectful analytics. We use Umami, an open-source analytics tool that does not collect personal data and does not require a cookie banner.
  • GDPR compliant. All data is managed in accordance with the European General Data Protection Regulation. Your data is yours, and it stays that way.
  • Full transparency. Our privacy policy is written to be understood, not to be ignored by a lawyer.
